Includes much information about Great Lakes steamboats and their captains; the Commercial Street area; Buffalo businesses and their proprietors; and the destructive 1844 gale. Includes some information about Rev. David Bacon, sent by the Missionary Society of Connecticut in 1800 and 1801 to minister to the Indians living around Lake Erie; and the visit of General Ellis to Buffalo in 1821.

Born in Canandaigua, Ontario County, N.Y., 17 May 1820; came to Detroit with his family in 1827. Lived in Detroit for most of his life; worked in the book business. He spent about 5 years in Buffalo during the 1840s, where he worked for W.B. & C.E. Peck Booksellers and Stationers, agents for Pomeroy & Co., forerunner of American Express. During the Mexican War, he served as quartermaster for the U.S. Army, and during the Civil War he was appointed quartermaster-general of Michigan. Died ...
